Piling rig delivery

Works on the 21 Moorfields Project are progressing well with the key element of steel grillage and decking installation to facilitate piling operations on schedule to be completed by the end of March 2018. Once complete, the grillage will support the 140 tonne piling rig and associated slave crane by transferring loads through the existing structural columns and foundations in Moorgate Underground Station.

The project will utilize a road closure on Fore St and Fore St Avenue over the Easter weekend, 30th March to the 2nd April, to deliver the key piling components to site in order to minimize the impact to local residents by undertaking this activity over a single weekend. The Principal Contractor, Mace are also continuing to form openings in the existing retained deck concrete slab at the pile positions.

Works continue behind the scenes in the station below, which ensure that the areas where the piles are installed are clear of any obstructions beneath the ground. Key tunneling works under Fore Street Avenue are also ongoing to create a new header into an existing underground sewer which will form the main waste discharge point for the new development.

The 16 number piles which will support the new building above will be excavated to a depth of up to 65 metres and are typically 2.4 metres in diameter. These concrete piles include large steel reinforcing cages to ensure their structural capacity. The Piling will commence in May 2018.

The Projects’ temporary accommodation is in the process is of being relocated onto the roof of the newly constructed Crossrail ticket office roof. Once complete, the main site pedestrian entrance will transfer away from the Barbican to Moorfields.
